Beverly Fanfan, the lead orgganizer of the Whiteaker Community Free Thanksgiving Dinner for 18 years, inspires me with her sense of community and dedication. She puts the the needs of the community and the people in the community before her own.
Beverly works all year long, raising money, getting donations, and drawing in volunteers to cook and serve, help with fundraisers, and take the lead in areas such as the clothing give-away, entertainment, and security. Her enthusiasm draws in local business, such as BiMart and Fred Meyers and they donate generously.
Beverly home is filled with donations for our garage sales and for the Thanksgiving give-away of clothes, blankets, and sleeping bags, as is her mother's. She maintains the dinner's hotline 24/7 and offers her home for the regular meetings of the organization.
The dinner is open to anyone who needs a place to go for Thanksgiving and the motto of the dinner is "Neighbors Helping Neighbors," a phrase Beverly coined and lives every day of her life.
